Mark’s Story from Australia

Mark has had a motorist deliberately try to run him over before. So when a bus driver gave him a dangerously close pass, he knew exactly what to do, and he didn’t stop at filing a Crime Stoppers report. He went straight to the bus company, footage in hand.

UpRide turns daily rides into data that drives change.

Every UpRider has a story. Here is Mark’s.

What happened prior to this incident and why do you record your ride?

I record my rides because I have previously had a motorist intentionally and repeatedly try to run me over while I was on my bike. I want evidence should an accident happen.

I also believe that once more drivers understand their actions may be recorded, they will think twice before choosing to ignore the road rules around cyclists.

When do you feel most vulnerable as a cyclist?

On roads with narrow shoulders and fast-moving traffic approaching from behind, but really any time cars are around. You can never predict when you will encounter a rogue driver.

What do you think are the most important things that can be done to improve safety for cyclists on the road?

Better education for drivers about the consequences of dangerous driving, particularly the human impact on riders and their families. Significantly increased penalties for dangerous driving. And more bike lanes and cycling infrastructure across the board.

Did you report your incident? What was the reporting process?

In Victoria, the only avenue for reporting dangerous driving appears to be through Crime Stoppers, which is fairly ineffective. A dedicated reporting system, like those available in other states, would make a significant difference.

I also emailed the video directly to the bus company. They responded with an apology, acknowledged that their driver had committed an offence, and advised that the driver would be counselled and their suitability for the role reviewed. That in itself is a good outcome.

What is your advice for other cyclists?

Stay alert. But also record your ride, that evidence may be crucial should something go wrong.
